My name is Michael Elhihi. I’m currently a company officer in California with nearly 20 years in the fire service. I originally entered the profession through EMS and volunteer firefighting before moving to my current department. I’ve served in multiple operational roles including engineer, tiller operator, truck driver, fireboat pilot, union president, and I am currently a Captain within my current department .
I’m the founder of Front Seat Academy — a leadership and promotional development platform built to help firefighters prepare not only for the promotional process, but for the responsibility that comes with the front seat.
A large part of my work has centered around studying leadership both inside and outside of the fire service, pulling lessons from business, performance psychology, entrepreneurship, team culture, and high-performing organizations to help develop a more human-centered approach to leadership in today’s fire service.
Front Seat Academy exists because the promotional process should identify leaders, not just test takers. Too often, capable firefighters with real experience struggle to translate what they know into a process built around evaluation, communication, and presence under pressure. We believe preparation should reflect the responsibility of the seat, not just the structure of the exam. There should be alignment between the process and the role itself.
Our mission is to prepare firefighters for promotion through real-world leadership development. We focus on command presence, communication, decision-making, and the ability to lead people effectively on the fireground and within the organization. This is not just about passing a test. The goal is shifting your mindset from simply preparing for promotion to preparing for responsibility.
Front Seat Academy bridges the gap between firefighter and officer by developing the mindset, confidence, and leadership skills required for the front seat. We prepare candidates for interviews, tactical scenarios, and the promotional process while emphasizing the real expectations that come with leadership after promotion. The fire service needs officers who can think clearly, communicate effectively, and lead with consistency when pressure is high and expectations matter most.
This is not built around memorized answers or rehearsed speeches. It is built around developing leaders who can step into the role with confidence, clarity, and accountability from day one. The goal is simple. When the opportunity comes, you are not trying to rise to the occasion. You are already operating at that level.
